An Ounce of Prevention….

Posted by admin on Dec 6, 2015 in Troubleshooting, Water Lines

Winter is in full force here in Central Oregon, and your plumbing is at risk. If your pipes freeze and break, the repairs can be very costly. There are some things that you can do, though, to help protect your home before any damage happens. First, make sure that your home’s exterior foundation vent covers are on. This will hold in the heat and help protect the pipes under your home. Second, remove all hoses from your hose bibs. This will help keep your hose bibs from freezing and breaking. Finally, and most importantly, never turn the heat off to your home. If the pipes in your walls freeze in addition to the pipes under your home, your home could flood when the pipes thaw out which will be expensive and messy. Take some precautions this winter. You know what they say, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”!

Need a Housesitter?

Prolonged heat outages in the winter greatly increase the chances your pipes could freeze.  Frozen pipes often burst causes a lot of damage and expense when they thaw out.  If you are planning to be away from home for any length of time this winter, have a neighbor, friend, or family member swing by to make sure the heat is still on in your home.  A quick check while you are gone could save you from a big headache and thousands of dollars in repairs when you return.

Beware of Your Hose Bibs!

Posted by admin on Apr 11, 2015 in Troubleshooting

Hose bibs, the faucets on the outside of your homes, are very handy.  What people don’t know is that they can also cause a lot of damage if they freeze and break during the winter.  When spring arrives and the pipe connected to the faucet thaws, it can leak and cause damage to the interior of your home.  All hoses should be removed before winter, and drips should be repaired. If the hose bib was installed correctly, it should drain out leaving it dry throughout the winter and problem free come spring.  Do a quit inspection inside your home after you turn on your hose bibs for the first time this spring, so you can catch any leaks before they cause major damage.
