Winter is in full force here in Central Oregon, and your plumbing is at risk. If your pipes freeze and break, the repairs can be very costly. There are some things that you can do, though, to help protect your home before any damage happens. First, make sure that your home’s exterior foundation vent covers are on. This will hold in the heat and help protect the pipes under your home. Second, remove all hoses from your hose bibs. This will help keep your hose bibs from freezing and breaking. Finally, and most importantly, never turn the heat off to your home. If the pipes in your walls freeze in addition to the pipes under your home, your home could flood when the pipes thaw out which will be expensive and messy. So take some precautions this winter and save your money in the process!

Water Heaters
There are signs to look for besides no hot water that will tell you your water heater may be failing. Rust and water staining the outside of the heater, running out of hot water sooner than you used to, or the water overheating are some of the clues that something is going wrong. If you turn the regulator on a gas water heater all the way up and still get luke warm water, something is wrong. Stay alert to these issues so you aren’t stranded without hot water an hour before work or with a house full of company. Change the water heater on your time, not the water heater’s time!

Water Lines
Do you know where your water main shut-off is located? While you are still outside working in your yard, it is a perfect time to find it and learn how to turn it off. Educate yourself before it starts to freeze. If your pipes break when your yard is covered in snow, you can lose valuable time trying to find it.
